Balfour Beatty and Industrial Chemicals Ltd (ICL) are advancing industrial decarbonisation by adopting hydrogen-based engine cleaning technology (Engine Carbon Clean / ECC) across heavy plant and commercial vehicle fleets. After successful pilot programmes, both organisations have committed to integrating ECC — an on-demand hydrogen gas generation system used to remove internal combustion engine carbon deposits — into ongoing maintenance regimes as a practical emissions and performance improvement technology. This represents an important industrial application of hydrogen-derived oxyhydrogen for engine optimisation, emissions reduction and lifecycle extension in diesel engines without requiring fundamental powertrain changes.

The technology delivers measurable fuel economy improvements and emissions reductions across a range of internal combustion engines without replacing existing diesel machinery — a compelling bridge solution on the pathway to net zero.

Both Balfour Beatty and ICL are deploying ECC because it integrates with standard maintenance cycles, enhances engine performance, and contributes to sustainability goals without operational disruption.
